Help!...Facebook?...Twitter?

Quilters, I need your advice!  Last  night, there was a news report on a local TV newscast about social media and small business.  It pointed out positives and minuses to both.  I have thought about both sites and wonder how valuable they would be to a shop owner.  For example, what exactly would I be 'twittering'? What would I have to say on a 'Facebook' page?  How much of my time would these sites require?  Who uses them?

I would like to hear back from from quilters who use both and those who don't.  What are your reasons for using them and for not using them.  Do you expect Quilt Shops to be involved with them? I would like some serious feedback here in the 'Comments' section and to make it worth your while I am going to have a software draw.  For every 25 respondents, I will be adding an Electric Quilt stand-alone software package to the basket.  I will begin with Judy Martins 'Stars & Sets' then add 'Amy Butler's, then Stash, then...well, we shall see. The draw(s) will be a the end of November so pass the word to all your quilting contacts!!

I would suggest Facebook to start. It's a great way to meet new quilting friends, share ideas, projects, etc. Twitter is good too, but I like the Facebook community feel much better myself.

Cheers,
Michele

I think I would start with Facebook. It's easy to use and quilters become friends and share on FB. I would post about new things in the store or if something is happening. Once a day-week is sufficient for posting and it doesn't take much time. One shop that I am a fan of does a weekly drawing for all those who are fans of the shop. Another announces sales on their page, some I would not have known about or checked out the shop during the sale, unless I had read about it on FB. It's instantanious and very user friendly and there are tons of quilters using it.

Add another vote for Facebook. That 140 character limit on Twitter is just too.... limiting! FB has more options for interactions with your fans, as well.

I have a FB page for my shop & it's great. I let my customers know about events coming up, new merchandise coming in, etc. My customers tell me they think it's great. They know when the next sale is or when something they've been waiting for has come in, etc. I would say, it can hurt to try it.

It looks like Facebook has taken an early lead! Thank you, ladies, for taking the time to share your thoughts. Your names will be going into the hat for the EQ software draw.

Hi Anita , as a new customer, I would like to add a vote for Facebook. I have lots of family and friends there and enjoy it. It helps me keep in touch with them. My sister-in-law even posted some pictures of quilting shops that they visited while on their vacation, that they knew I would have loved looking at. It was great.

Hi,
I own a quilt shop and do both but I really like facebook the best. It lets my customers know what is going on in the shop! I found facebook a little easier to operate and understand. Hope that helps
